Though the Waves (2-4-4) extended their unbeaten streak to five games, they were left wondering how this one got away after the Hornets (6-2-2) scored the game-tying goal in the 89th minute.
“This game had some pros and cons,” Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. “The positive was that we created some tremendous scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, the better team didn’t win, and anyone here today saw we had our chances to put them away. But goals change the game. Had we gone up 2-0 and 3-0, we wouldn’t have been in the position we were.
The Waves got their goal shortly before halftime. Freshman forward Sage Coralli (
Pepperdine continued to attack over the remainder of the contest and finished with a 23-7 shot advantage, but the Hornets’ Trojan made seven of her nine saves after halftime, including a couple of stops on Pepperdine breakaways.
With the clock winding down in regulation,
Both teams had their chances to win in overtime, as the Hornets had a couple of near-miss headers, while Coralli hit a header inches wide right at the end of the first overtime, and Trojan stopped a point-blank shot by Rupp in the 106th minute.
“Results have to follow performance,” Ward said. “At this point we need to win games. We need to bounce back on Sunday.”
