SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Senior midfielder Mckenzie Hill struck the game-tying goal in the 87th minute and the Pepperdine women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 tie at 11th-ranked San Diego in a West Coast Conference match on Sunday.
It’s the sixth tie of the season for the Waves (3-6-6, 0-2-1), extending the single-season school record. San Diego is now 11-1-3, 2-0-1 and hasn’t lost in 11 games.
The Toreros broke a scoreless tie in the 79th minute on Amy Epsten’s goal. But the Waves evened the score just a few minutes before the end of regulation. Junior forward Amanda Rupp (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) set up Hill (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon HS) for a shot from inside the box, and Hill’s quick jab with the outside of her foot found the net for her first goal of the season at 86:50. Rupp notched her team-high fifth assist of the season.
Pepperdine finished with a 14-10 advantage on shots.
“It was an awesome performance and we played some great attacking soccer,” Pepperdine Coach Twila Kaufman said. “Mckenzie did what senior leaders do, she found a way to get a goal with very little time left with her own sheer will. We had some more chances in overtime as well. I think we could have won if we had a little more time.”
The Waves are scheduled to host San Francisco and Saint Mary’s next weekend on Friday and Sunday, Oct. 26 and 28, respectively.
