The Waves (3-5-5, 0-1) had their seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end, while the Lions (9-3-1, 1-0) extended their school-record winning streak to nine games.
It was a closely contested game throughout, though Pepperdine ended up with advantages of 12-5 on shots and 4-0 on corner kicks.
LMU’s first shot of the game, however, came on a penalty kick at 12:48 in the first half. Senior forward Jamie Bell took the ball at the top of the box, made an excellent turn to get past a Pepperdine defender and into the penalty area, and after she appeared to be tackled from behind, the referee whistled for the PK. Sophomore midfielder Lacey Bartels scored from the spot for her third goal of the season.
While the Waves started racking up shots, it wasn’t until the final minute of the game that they had their best chance. Following a corner kick, a handball was called on an LMU defender in the penalty area at 89:35. Junior forward Emily Wynne (
“Their keeper read it, guessed right and made a great save,” Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. “They had a penalty kick and scored, and we had one and missed, and that’s the game. We had our chances. We had some opportunities late in the game and to not get a result is unfortunate.
“We’ve shown resilience all season long, and I think we’re still going to do some great things in conference. I’m proud of our girls and the effort and fight they showed today. But a loss stings, especially when you start conference at home against your rival and you don’t win.”
