Final Stats

MALIBU, Calif. -- A season of tough losses continued for the Pepperdine men's basketball team when it suffered a 72-71 West Coast Conference (WCC) loss to San Francisco Monday night at Firestone Fieldhouse. It marked the Waves' ninth defeat by five points or less this season.

Trailing 70-68 with 1:50 remaining, Pepperdine (4-16, 0-4) twice had a chance to tie the game but a missed shot and turnover doomed the Waves as San Francisco's Armondo Surratt hit two free throws with :27 remaining to seal the win for the Dons (7-11, 3-0).

Leading 59-51 with 10:28 remaining, the Waves turned the ball over on seven of their final 13 possessions to allow San Francisco back into the game as the Dons went on a 13-3 run to take a 64-62 lead with 5:50 remaining.

The game was tied 68-68 with 3:51 remaining before San Francisco scored four straight points to take 72-68 lead with :27 remaining.

The loss was a season-high sixth straight for Pepperdine and 12th consecutive against a WCC opponent dating back to last season.

The Waves also are off to their first 0-4 start in WCC play since opening conference action with four straight losses in 1996.

Danny Cavic scored a career-high 19 points and Surratt added 18 to lead San Francisco.

Senior guard Chase Griffin, who hit a three-point basket at the buzzer, and sophomore guard Tomas Pranciliauskas both had 12 points to lead Pepperdine.

The Waves will look to turn their fortunes around on Saturday when they travel to Loyola Marymount to take on the Lions at Gersten Pavilion beginning at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live by CSTV beginning at 7:30 p.m.
