STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Trailing by as many as 22 points, including 19 in the second half, the Pepperdine men's basketball team staged a spirited second-half comeback getting to within five points with seven minutes remaining before eventually falling 90-74 to Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Mario Boggan and JamesOn Curry each scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Cowboys (9-0) to the victory and perfect on the season.
Senior guard Marvin Lea scored 14 of his team-high 20 points in the second half for Pepperdine (1-6). Senior guard Chase Griffin added 18 points and sophomore guard Tomas Pranciliauskas contributed 11.
Oklahoma State led much of the first half, but the Waves came out firing after the intermission, cutting into a 35-19 halftime deficit with a run that pulled Pepperdine within 61-56 with 8:39 remaining.
After each team hit layups, the Cowboys slowly built a lead that stretched to 69-60 on a jumper by Curry and to 74-62 on another Curry jumper. Pepperdine never got closer than 10 after that.
Boggan added 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Obi Muonelo added 16 points and seven assists, while Terrel Harris and David Monds had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
After shooting just 22.6 percent (7 of 31) in the first half, the Waves were on target in the second half as they connected on 58.3 percent (21 of 36) of their field goal attempts, including seven of 13 from three-point range.
Oklahoma State took advantage of its size as it out-rebounded Pepperdine, 41-28, and held a 60-38 points-in-the-paint advantage.
The Waves are next in action on Monday when they visit Colorado in Boulder beginning at 6 p.m. (PST).
