Pepperdine Cross Country Teams Travel to UC Riverside Invitational

The Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams, coming off solid showings at last week's Pepperdine Invitational, return to the course on Saturday when they travel to Riverside, California, to compete in the UC Riverside Invitational at the Orange Grove Course.

The men's eight-kilometer race is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m. and the five-kilometer women's run begins at 9:30 a.m.

At last week's Pepperdine Invitational, the men's team captured its second straight title as it finished the four-mile run ahead of Cal State Northridge and USC. The Waves totaled 31 points while Cal State Northridge was second with 44 and USC placed third with 55 points.

Once again, senior Chad Trammell led Pepperdine as he won his second straight race in a time of 20:53. Trammell was one of five Waves to finish in the Top 10.

Sophomores Sam Hudson and Matthew Jenks placed fifth and sixth, respectively, posting times of 22:01 and 22:11. Freshman Tim Hatters (22:38) was ninth while fellow rookie B.J. Flemming (23:01) was 10th.

On the women's side, junior Tarrah Crowley led the Waves to a second place showing as she turned in a time of 19:43 to finish seventh in the five-kilometer race.

Cal State Los Angeles won the event with 23 points while Pepperdine placed second with 66. Cal State Northridge was third with 87 points and USC totaled 92 points to place fourth.

Cal State Northridge's Liz Camy finished first in a time of 18:11. The Waves had a total of six players finish in the Top 20. Freshman Courtney Smith placed ninth in a time of 19:55 while freshman Marissa Kerby (19:59) and junior Kyla Maher (20:01) placed 11th and 12th, respectively.

Freshman Brieanna Carroll completed the course in a time of 20:27 to finish 16th while fellow freshman Amanda Gordon was 20th with a time of 20:51.

Following this weekend's UC Riverside Invitational, Pepperdine will take a week off before returning to action on Saturday, October 15, when it competes in the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo.

THE PROGRAM: Cross country is a non-scholarship sport at Pepperdine. The women's team finished seventh at the 2004 West Coast Conference (WCC) Championships while the men finished eighth. Portland won the men's conference crown for the 25th consecutive year. On the women's side, Portland claimed the league championship for the 15th time in school history.

Dick Kampmann: Dick Kampmann is in the midst of his 17th season as the head coach of the Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams. Kampmann was tabbed the West Coast Conference (WCC) women's "Coach of the Year" in 1999 after leading the team to a second place finish at the league meet. Kampmann coached cross country and track for 26 years (1959-85) at nearby University High in West Los Angeles, directing his Warrior teams to 11 Los Angeles City team championships. While coaching junior varsity and varsity boys and girls in cross country and track and field at University High, Kampmann led his teams to an astonishing total of 86 conference championships. Additionally, Kampmann coached 49 All-Los Angeles City individual champions and 292 individual conference winners. After retiring from the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1985, Kampmann began teaching physical education courses at Pepperdine in 1988. Kampmann started serving as the head men's and women's cross country coach at Pepperdine during the 1989 season. A certified instructor by The Athletic Congress, Kampmann earned his Level I certificate in 1985 and his Level II certificate in 1987 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
