Doerner Advances to Singles Round of 32

College Station, Texas - No. 34 Scott Doerner took a three set match from Hamid Mirzadeh of Florida Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Men's Singles Championship at College Station, Texas. Doerner advances to Thursday's Round of 32 with the 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 victory.

Pepperdine's other junior in the draw of the nation's 64 best players, Pedro Rico, was ousted from the tournament on day one by No. 32 Jonathan Chu of Harvard. Chu bested 25th-ranked Rico in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

Doerner and Rico will team on Thursday to face Dmitriy Koch and Alberto Sottocorno of Tulane. The first round doubles match-up is slated for 2:00 p.m. CT.

In singles Doerner will face No. 18 Benjamin Becker of Baylor at 10:00 a.m. Central Thursday. Becker, a 9-16 seed, defeated Rico in the Waves' quarterfinal match with the Bears on Saturday.
