Pepperdine Sweeps West Coast Conference Individual Awards

Malibu, Calif. - For the first time in program history, the Pepperdine baseball team swept the West Coast Conference's (WCC) major player awards, claiming the conference's Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year, the WCC announced today.

Sophomore catcher Chad Tracy was tabbed the conference's top player while junior left-hander Paul Coleman was selected Pitcher of the Year and rookie Barry Enright was voted Freshman of the Year.

Tracy and Coleman also were named first team All-WCC along with senior utility player Steve Kleen. Enright and freshman shortstop Danny Worth were selected to the second team while freshmen outfielders Donald Brown and Adrian Ortiz, senior pitcher Kea Kometani and junior second baseman David Uribes received honorable mention recognition.

Tracy becomes the 11th player in Pepperdine history to be named the WCC's Player of the Year while Coleman is the 12th Waves hurler to be tabbed the conference's top pitcher and Enright is the program's 10th rookie to earn Freshman of the Year honors.

In his sophomore campaign, Tracy finished fourth in the WCC with a .370 average. He also led the conference in hits (44), total bases (75) and slugging percentage (.630) while ranking second in home runs (6) and RBI (27).

Overall, Tracy is batting .361 with 11 home runs, 55 RBI and 21 doubles, which tie for sixth on Pepperdine's single-season list. His 82 hits, 11 home runs, 21 RBI, 140 total bases and .617 slugging percentage top the WCC while his 55 RBI are second and his .361 average ranks third.

Coleman posted a 6-1 record, 2.31 ERA and held WCC opponents to a .192 average. His six wins tied Enright for second while his opponents' batting average led the conference and his 50 strikeouts ranked seventh.

Overall, Coleman, who got off to the second-best start in program history at 8-0, is currently 9-1 with a 2.51 ERA, has a team-leading 86 strikeouts and an opponents' batting average of .195.

Earlier in the season, Coleman set a Pepperdine single-game record with a 16 strikeout performance against New Orleans.

Enright went a perfect 8-0 in WCC play to lead the conference in victories and posted a 3.36 ERA. Overall, the freshman right hander is 9-1 with a 4.33 ERA in 16 starts.

Kleen, who is the Waves starting first baseman and closer, batted .339 with two home runs and 20 RBI while posting a 1-2 record, 2.31 ERA and conference-leading eight saves in league play.

Overall, Kleen is batting .343 with six home runs and 45 RBI in addition to registering a 3-3 record, 2.14 ERA and 13 saves. His saves total ranks second on Pepperdine's single-season list and ties for fourth nationally.

Worth took over the starting shortstop job four games into the season and is batting .287 with one home run and 27 RBI while committing just six errors in 240 chances. He batted .276 with 12 RBI in WCC play.

Uribes, who is batting .315 overall, with a team-high 50 runs scored and career-high 22 stolen bases, hit .317 with 28 runs scored and 14 stolen bases during conference play.

Kometani went 6-3 with a 3.65 ERA in WCC action and is 9-5 overall with a 3.31 ERA and a career-high 83 strikeouts. His nine wins are also a career-high.

Brown batted .302 with two home runs and 22 RBI in WCC play. On the season, he is batting .298 with a two home runs and 25 RBI while recording a team-high tying six outfield assists.

Ortiz, who is batting .271 overall and is tied with Brown for the team-lead in outfield assists, batted .321 in WCC play.

Pepperdine continues its season this weekend when it travels to Loyola Marymount for the WCC Championship Series beginning Friday at 3 p.m. The winner will be crowned the conference champion and earn the WCC's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
