No. 13 Pepperdine Takes Out Northwestern, 6-1

March 23, 2005

Malibu, Calif. - The No. 13 Pepperdine men's tennis team (12-2) extended its winning streak to six matches by beating No. 59 Northwestern 6-1 on Wednesday. The Waves took the doubles point and five of six singles matches to earn the win at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

The 14th-ranked team of Scott Doerner and Pedro Rico took an 8-4 win on court one to give the Waves the lead, before the Wildcats took the number three match to tie. Pepperdine relied on Jonas Berg and Ivor Lovrak after the duo made their rankings debut this week. The 40th-ranked tandem turned in a 9-7 win give the Waves the doubles point. Pepperdine has not lost the doubles point in any of its 2005 dual matches.

The Waves' second point came when Northwestern's Tommy Hanus withdrew in the second set of his match with Doerner. At the time Doerner was ahead 6-1, 2-0.

No. 16 Rico was the first Wave to complete his match, scoring a 6-0, 6-2 victory on court two. Pepperdine's clinching match was on court five with Richard Johnson's straight set win over Adam Schaechterle, 6-2, 6-4.

For good measure Waves took points in the numbers three and six positions with Berg and Alexis Rafidison both winning in abbreviated third sets.

The Waves will next host No. 2 Illinois, Friday at 1:00 p.m.
