Waves Stay Perfect in WCC, Beat LMU 5-2

Feb. 23, 2005

Los Angeles, Calif. - Tuning up for their two big matches this weekend the No. 16 Waves improved to 6-1 with a 5-2 win at Loyola Marymount Wednesday. Pepperdine will take its five-match winning streak to Texas to take on top-ranked Baylor and Southern Methodist this weekend.

The Lions posted two singles wins, but could not overtake the Waves who improve to 3-0 in West Coast Conference play.

Scott Doerner, playing in the number one position for the second time this season, remained undefeated in singles play by beating Michael Wojnarowicz, 6-2, 6-1. No. 43 Doerner broke Wojnarowicz's serve three times in the first set to take the advantage. LMU's top player held serve in the first game of the second set, but Doerner retaliated winning the next six games to take the 6-1 set.

On court three Jonas Berg handled Beau Berglund with a quick 6-0, 6-2 win before Richard Johnson clinched the win for the Waves by besting Linas Cicenas 6-3, 6-3 for Pepperdine's fourth point.

Pepperdine's doubles sweep was led by the 21st-ranked team of Doerner and Pedro Rico. The junior tandem stayed perfect on the year by winning four of the last five games to take the 8-6 win. The team of Berg and Ivor Lovrak took an early 8-3 win before number three Kevin Borzenski and Richard Johnson won 8-3 to clinch Pepperdine's first point of the day.

The Waves will be in search of another huge upset this weekend in Waco, Tex. Pepperdine plays the defending national champion Baylor Bears on Friday night. Saturday Pepperdine will take on No. 38 SMU in Dallas.
