Malibu, Calif. - Rain delayed doubles action Saturday at the ITA Regionals in Malibu, California at Pepperdine University, but the weather did not affect the play of singles competition.
The No. 2 seed Pedro Rico of Pepperdine, served San Diego State's Robert Sabo a 7-5, 6-2 loss, but was knocked out of competition when Arizona's Roger Matalonga, the No. 3 seed, handed Rico a 6-3, 6-1 defeat. Matalonga first beat Richard Johnson of Pepperdine 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Arizona State's Ryan McBride also captured a win in the quarterfinals, but was defeated by No. 1 seed, Ben Kohlloeffel of UCLA. Kohlloeffel and Matalonga will square off in the final match on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The semifinals of doubles will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday and will be followed by the final match. Kohlloeffel and Phillip Gruendler of UCLA will face Pepperdine's Rico and Ivor Lovrak and Mathieu Dehaine and Aaron Yovan of UCLA will face teammates Jeremy Drean and Chris Surapol.
