Malibu, Calif. - No. 27 Pepperdine won its second men's tennis match of the day by dismissing of West Coast Conference challenger Santa Clara by a 7-0 margin on Saturday. Earlier in the day the Waves shut out Cal Poly by the same score.
Backed by a 3-0 sweep of doubles matches the Waves had full control of momentum going into singles play. Ivor Lovrak and Jonas Berg dominated their number two doubles match. After being down 1-2, the duo won seven games in a row to take set, 8-2.
Behind a game one break and Scott Doerner's serve the No. 26 tandem of Doerner and Pedro Rico bested Santa Clara's Taylor Bedilion and Jan Macek, 8-6. In three of Doerner's four service games, including the clinching game, SCU was unable to score a point.
For good measure, in the number three spot Kevin Borzenski and Alexis Rafidison came from a game down at 5-6 to win their set by an 8-6 margin.
Singles would see more of the same as all six matches were won by Pepperdine in two sets.
13th-ranked Rico won his number one match, defeating Bedilion, 6-1, 6-3. Doerner again proved to have Macek's number when their singles match mirrored the doubles result; Doerner won 6-2, 6-1.
At number six, Richard Johnson held off a late move by A.J. Kerin to win 6-2, 7-6 in a tiebreaker.
Pepperdine continues its homestand when UC Irvine comes to the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Wednesday, February 9 for a 1:00 p.m. match.
