Box Score

Behind an early second-half goal by junior forward Jenna Fodor, the No. 21-ranked Pepperdine women's soccer team opened the 2004 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton Friday night at Titan Stadium. The win marked the Waves' second consecutive season-opening victory and improved their all-time record to 7-3-2 in season openers. Fodor, who was assisted on the play by senior forward Ali Pavoni, moved into eighth place on Pepperdine's all-time points list with 39, moving one point ahead of teammate Megan Woods. It was also the 13th of her career, tying her for 10th place on the school's all-time goals list. Pavoni's assist moved her into a tie for eighth place on Pepperdine's all-time career assist list with 13, tying her with Fodor and Jennifer Peterson (1996-97). Fodor tapped home a saved shot in the 53rd minute for the contest's lone score. The initial cross came courtesy of Jennifer Brewer and was put on goal by Pavoni. Titan keeper Nicole Williams made a diving save, but Fodor found the rebound on the back post, tipping it past two Cal State Fullerton defenders at the goal line. A defensive first half saw more fouls (12) than shots (9), and the Titans held an 8-1 shot advantage in the opening period en route to a 19-7 margin for the match. Junior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli earned the shutout for the Waves as she collected six saves and increased her school-record shutout total to 16. Pepperdine makes its home debut on Sunday when it hosts San Jose State at Tari Frahm Rokus Field beginning at 1 p.m.
