MALIBU, Calif. -- The 20th-ranked Pepperdine University men's tennis team (10-5) shutout Cal Poly 7-0 in the first of two matches for the Waves on Sunday at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Pepperdine continues play this afternoon versus Princeton at 2:00 p.m.
The Waves jumped out 1-0 after sweeping the doubles point. The No. 8th-ranked tandem of Pedro Rico and Calle Hansen took care of Brett Van Ling and John Nguyen, 9-8 (4), at the top spot. Scott Doerner and Alexandre Herrera, the West Coast Conference's (WCC) Duo of the Month, overturned Stacey Meronoff and Davey Jones with ease, 8-2, and the No. 3 doubles team for Pepperdine (Kevin Borzenski and Richard Johnson) upended the Mustangs' Brian Kent and Andrew Diefenbach, 8-5.
Pepperdine won four of six singles matches in straight sets for the Waves. Herrera and Alexis Rafidison earned the first two points after recording smooth 6-2, 6-1, victories over Brian Kent and Davey Jones, respectively. The top singles player and No. 26th-ranked player in the country, Rico, defeated Nguyen, 6-0, 6-2 to seal the win for Pepperdine.
The final three points were registered in exciting matches from Justin Montgomery, Richard Johnson and Hansen. Freshman Montgomery, an energetic and bubbly athlete playing at No. 6 singles, overpowered Meronoff (6-2, 6-3). Johnson rallied and beat Nick Tracy at the fifth singles position 5-7, 7-5, 10-5, and No. 45 Hansen finished off the sweep with a thrilling win at No. 2 singles over Van Linge 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
