LOS ANGELES - Facing cold and windy weather conditions, the 13th-ranked USC men's tennis team defeated No. 21 Pepperdine, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Trojans improve to 6-1 this season, while the Waves fall to 7-3.
The Trojans opened the match by garnering the doubles point with convincing victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Drew Hoskins and Daniel Langre upset Pepperdine's 16th-ranked Scott Doerner and Herrera, 8-3, at court two, following an 8-2 victory by USC's Jamil Al-Agba and Ruben Torres over Kevin Borzenski and Alexis Rafidison at court three. The Trojans' only doubles loss was at center court, where the Waves 11th-ranked duo of Calle Hansen and Pedro Rico prevailed.
Hansen captured Pepperdine's first point of the day by defeating Al-Agba at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-3, but it did not take long for the Trojans to collect four more wins and clinch the match. Adriano Biasella, Johan Berg, Langre and Torres each posted two-set victories at the No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 positions, respectively. Berg accounted for the critical fourth point when he defeated Doerner, 6-0, 7-6 at court No. 3.
Pepperdine's Richard Johnson completed the match by defeating Hoskins at No. 6 in a 10-point tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.
Pepperdine prepares for its toughest match of the season when No. 3 Baylor travels to Malibu Sunday at noon.
