All-Americans Carolina Llano and Michael Putnam were tabbed the West Coast Conference's (WCC) women's and men's "Golfers of the Month" for October, the conference announced on Wednesday. Putnam shared the men's honor with Portland's Mike McCabe.
Putnam led the Waves to a pair of top five finishes during the month of October as they claimed the Club Glove Intercollegiate and placed fifth at the Tennessee Tournament of Champions. The junior from Tacoma, Washington, carded a 1-under par score of 215 to tie for individual medalist honors following rounds of 67-73-75 at the Club Glove Intercollegiate.
At the Tennessee Tournament of Champions, Putnam fired a 2-under score of 214 to tie for 14th place. He shot rounds of 71-68-75 to lead the Waves. In six rounds, Putnam compiled an under-par stroke average of 71.50 that included rounds of 67 and 68.
In addition to his accomplishments on the course, Putnam received an invitation to compete in the College All-America Golf Classic scheduled for November 23-25 at the El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas. Putnam, who was one of 29 players to receive an invitation, was invited after earning honorable mention All-America honors as a sophomore last season.
Putnam is also the defending WCC individual champion.
Llano posted a top-10 finish at the Pepsi Stanford Intercollegiate, the only tournament she participated in during the month of October. Llano tied for ninth place after shooting rounds of 67-73-74 for a 2-under par score of 214.
The field at the Pepsi Stanford Intercollegiate included eight teams that were ranked in Golfweek's Top 25, including four of the top-five. The field also included Golfstats' top four players, including Llano, who earned the No. 1 ranking.
The Medellin, Colombia native has finished in the Top 10 in all three tournaments that she has participated in so far this season. The sophomore is the returning WCC individual champion after recording an 8-under par score of 211 at last season's WCC golf championship. She became the fourth different Pepperdine golfer to win the WCC individual title and went on to lead the Waves to a second place finish at the NCAA Championship.
