Scott Doerner Gives Strong Showing At Midland Invitational

MIDLAND, Texas - Sophomore Scott Doerner completed a successful week of competition for the Pepperdine men's tennis team at the Racquet Club Collegiate Tournament in Midland, Texas, Oct. 17-19.

In Doerner's second fall tournament of the 2003 season, he finished the weekend 3-1 and advanced to the semifinals before falling to UCLA's Krystof Kwuinta (7-6, 0-6, 2-6). Earlier in the week, he knocked off the the University of Texas' Andy Mack, 6-2, 6-0 in his first singles match.

"Scott has matured a lot in the last year and you could really tell on the court," commented Waves' assistant coach, Per Nilsson. "He's a fighter and he won some really tough matches this weekend. I foresee him having a strong season this year."

In the second round, the Melbourne, Australia, native, defeated No. 99-ranked Khaled El Dorry from Texas A&M. The scores were: 6-1, 7-5. He turned right around and dropped UCLA's Alberto Francis, 7-6, 6-4, in the quarter finals before falling to Kwuinta.

Junior Kevin Borzenski also competed at the Raquet Club Collegiate Tournament with Doerner.

The men's tennis team will travel to Carson, Calif., this weekend, Oct. 24-26, for the ITA Omni Hotel Regionals.

1st round singles Kevin Borzenski lost to Martija Zgaga (Baylor) 6-2,6-0. Scott Doerner beat Andy Mack (Texas) 7-6,6-2.

2nd round singles Scott Doerner beat #99 Khaled El Dorry (Texas A&M) 6-1,7-5.

Quarter finals Doerner beat Alberto Francis (UCLA) 7-6,6-4.

Semi finals Doerner lost to Krystof Kwuinta (UCLA) 7-6,0-6,2-6.
