BJ Porter, a former college head coach, joined the Pepperdine women’s basketball program in the summer of 2017 and spent one season as an assistant coach.
Porter arrived at Pepperdine after serving as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Antelope Valley. He was also an NCAA Division I athlete and played professionally abroad.
“BJ Porter is a bright, young mind in the basketball world, and has a vigor that is unmatched when it comes to being a student of the game,” said DeLisha Milton-Jones at the time of Porter’s hiring. “His energy will be infectious and his faith will be a wonderful asset for our team as we grow as a program. I am very excited to have him on board.”
Porter served as the Pioneers’ head coach in 2016-17 after being promoted from assistant coach, a position he had held for one season.
Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Porter was the head women’s basketball coach at Layton Christian Academy in his hometown of Layton, Utah, for the 2014-15 season. He led Layton to a region championship that year after the program had won two games in the two previous seasons.
“I am so blessed and honored to be able to be a part of the Pepperdine family,” said Porter at the time of his hiring. “I would like to thank Coach Delisha Milton-Jones and Director of Athletics Steve Potts, along with the rest of the administration for giving me this opportunity. I am excited and believe in the vision that Coach Milton-Jones has for this program, and I am very grateful to be a part of implementing it.”
Porter played his collegiate ball at Portland and Weber State before finishing his career at now-Division II Azusa Pacific, where he earned all-conference and all-region honors. After several pre-draft workouts with NBA teams, the 6-foot-3 guard went on to play professionally in Parral, Mexico for the Mineros de Parral.
He played his prep basketball at Layton Christian Academy, where he received state MVP honors as a senior.
Porter has also previously worked for World Star Basketball Academy, which specializes in skill development for athletes around the world. He graduated from Azusa Pacific with a degree in sociology in 2013.
He and his wife Katrina were married in 2015 and have a daughter, Tatum.
