SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - There couldn't have been a much better start to West Coast Conference action for Pepperdine women's volleyball (10-3, 2-0 WCC), as the Waves swept opening weekend with a 3-1 win over San Francisco (8-7, 0-2 WCC).

"San Francisco came out playing really aggressive volleyball and our response was impressive," stated Head Coach Scott Wong after the match. "Today was a collective team effort and we are going to need to lean on each other as we continue our pursuit of a WCC title!"

Maggie Beauer led all Waves with 14 kills, while Ella Piskorz added 11. Chloe Pravednikov and Mariia Nikol Dvornikova each tallied nine, and Irelynd Lorenzen totaled a pair of blocks on the defensive end.

Down a couple points in the early going, Dvornikova helped tie the first set at eight with a kill. A 5-1 spurt would catapult the Dons back in front 15-10, and San Francisco would keep an arms' length the rest of the way. Beauer and Dvornikova had a few late kills to make it close but it wasn't enough as San Francisco took a 1-0 advantage.

Pepperdine would only get better as the match progressed. The Waves' defense stepped up in a big way, forcing several attack errors while Pravednikov got a hot hand to give the blue and orange an 8-3 lead early. Pepperdine cruised, never trailing in the frame. Raymond joined the offensive onslaught in the later stages, sending home a kill that put the Waves up 21-17, which started a 3-0 run to effectively put the set out of reach. Piskorz put the cherry on top of a 25-19 set victory with a kill, and the match was tied 1-1.

The Waves put no doubt on who had the momentum, as Laine Briggs landed a service ace and Pepperdine led set three early, 7-3. The blue and orange soon went on a 4-0 run, going up 11-4 thanks to a couple bad sets on San Francisco and the Waves defense forcing an attack error. Both squads would trade points before the Dons went on a 5-0 run, pulling back within one at 14-13. The momentum kept swinging in San Francisco's direction as the Dons would soon take a 19-18 lead before Pepperdine responded with a 3-0 run to regain the lead. Lorenzen rattled home a kill that forced set point, but San Fran rallied with a 3-0 response to put set point on the Waves. Pepperdine answered back with three consecutive points and took a 2-1 match lead with a thrilling 27-25 set victory.

Set four was another close battle, and Pepperdine grabbed a 7-6 lead following a Dvornikova kill. The Waves never trailed by more than two early on and eventually took a two-point lead after a 4-0 run put Pepperdine in front 15-13 at the media timeout. The blue and orange would rip off another 4-0 run later, capped by a service ace from Iva Popovic, who recorded her first action since a knee injury ended her 2025 season early. That run would prove to be the difference as Pepperdine closed out the match with a 25-22 victory and a 3-1 win over San Francisco.

GAME NOTES

Dvornikova's .304 hitting percentage is the highest she's recorded in any match this season. Her 20 kills between the two matches this weekend are the second-most in any two-match stretch this season for her.
Briggs ranks 2nd in the WCC with 230 digs
San Francisco had a slight edge in digs, 53-49.
The Waves racked up 10 service aces, while the Dons had just four.
Pepperdine was unstoppable in the fourth set with a .353 hit percentage.

The Waves will return home for a pair of matches next week Thursday (Pacific, 6pm) and Saturday (Saint Mary's, 1pm), with the latter serving as the program's alumni day. While both contests will air on ESPN+, fans are encouraged to purchase tickets here and help pack Firestone Fieldhouse.
