Women’s Soccer Blanks Arizona on Senior Day

MALIBU, Calif . – Pepperdine women's soccer (4-2-2) defeated Arizona (3-4-1) 2-0 Sunday afternoon on Senior Day for the team's Mental Health Awareness match at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.

"When you play a good opponent, you have to also be resolute on defense," Head coach Tim Ward said. "Really proud of our goalies. Both Ava and Jill were exceptional. Our defensive unit was outstanding. Just the whole team ethos towards doing the hard work, I think that's what I am most proud of today."

Fitting on senior day, it was Julia Quinonez who tabbed both goals for the Waves Sunday afternoon. Wasting no time, Quinonez shot a rocket from outside the lefthand side of the box to find the back of the net just under the crossbar on the right-hand hand. Alex Pendleton fed the ball, good for her second assist this season.

Preserving the shutout early, Ava Hartstein came up huge with a save on a penalty kick in the 11th minute in just the second start of her career and first PK faced. Outside of the one-on-one opportunity, Arizona did not consistently threaten offensively early, forcing just the one save in the first half.

Staying on top of the Wildcats, Quinonez found herself in the right place at the right time for her second of the day. In the 30th minute, Quinonez capitalized on a ball rebounded by the Arizona goalie from another Wave attempt off the foot of Kate Ryan. Tapping the goal in, it is the senior's second brace of the season.

Taking a 2-0 lead into the second half, Pepperdine registered fewer shots as the Wildcats urgency picked up. Jillian Medvecky subbed into goal for the latter 45 minutes, picking up a pair of saves. Despite six corners from Arizona as time wound down, the Pepperdine defense held strong to secure the third shutout this year, and second one this week.

"To our seniors: I am so grateful for everything they have poured into our program over the past four, five years," Ward said. "Not only exceptional soccer players, but absolutely amazing women inside and out. We are so proud of them."

GAME NOTES

Julia Quinonez now has seven goals on the season, leading both the team and the conference.
Up to 26 netted in her career, Quinonez is now tied for eighth in the record book for all-time goals.
Alex Pendleton has had an assist in the past two games.
This is Pepperdine's third multi-goal performance of the year.
Pepperdine outshot Arizona 12-8.
The Wildcats had more set piece chances, outpacing the Waves on corner kicks 10-4.
Conscious of the invisible line, Pepperdine was not caught offside once, compared to Arizona's six offsides calls.
The Waves improve to 13-1-2 all-time against the Wildcats, including 6-0-1 in Malibu.
Pepperdine is undefeated in Malibu through nonconference play at 3-0-1 heading into WCC matches.

The Waves head south this week for the final non-conference match against San Diego State Thursday night. The match, scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m., will be streamed on YouTube with live stats available at www.pepperdinewaves.com.
