BALTIMORE, Md. - Former Wave baseball player Chad Tracy received the ultimate call-up this past Saturday night, being named Interim Manager of the Boston Red Sox.
Â
The move was made following the Red Sox parting ways with Alex Cora and several other coaching staff members.
Â
Tracy played three seasons at Pepperdine (2004-06) and couldn't have had a much better collegiate tenure. He recorded a career .334 batting average across 751 at-bats, an on-base percentage of .395, and an OPS of .944. Tracy earned WCC Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors in 2005. He was as good in the classroom, garnering WCC All-Academic First Team in 2006 and WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll distinctions in each year.
Â
Tracy was selected in the third round of the 2006 draft by the Texas Rangers, beginning an eight-year career as a professional player. He eventually won the MILB.com Organization All-Star award while in the Rangers organization in 2010 and 2011. Texas traded him to the Colorado Rockies in January 2012 before Tracy signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals in December 2012.
Â
Several years later, Tracy transitioned to the coaching ranks, beginning as the manager for Low-A Burlington (2015) and High-A Inland Empire (2016-17), which are both previous affiliates of the Los Angeles Angels. He then served as the Angels' minor league field coordinator from 2018-21 before moving to Massachusetts to become the Worcester Red Sox manager, the triple-a affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
Â
Boston is 2-0 since Chad's callup following the Red Sox 5-0 shutout last night over the defending AL champion Toronto Blue Jays. Boston's first home game at Fenway Park with Tracy as the manager is this Friday against the Houston Astros. The Red Sox will also make a primetime national television appearance (ESPN) on May 7 when they host the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway.
Â
Chad is one of three former Waves currently among professional ranks, which includes A.J. Puckett (signed with Charros de Jalisco of the Mexican League on April 17) and Billy Cook (Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder).

Tracy's LA area roots go beyond Pepperdine and the Angels. His father Jim was a Major League manager for 11 seasons, beginning a tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2001. Jim was in attendance at Camden Yards in Baltimore on Sunday to witness Boston's 5-3 win over the Orioles behind Willson Contreras' two-run homer and Aroldis Chapman's save. The victory not only marked his son's first win as a MLB manager, but Chad's 500th win overall as a manager (including minor leagues)."We've lost this in baseball; the guys who are baseball-lifers that get rewarded and get to the big leagues... these guys paid their dues. Obviously bittersweet, but these are the kind of guys you like to see rewarded."
