
No. 9 Women's Tennis Dominates LMU, Wins 7-0

MALIBU, Calif. — No. 9 Pepperdine women's tennis (15-4, 6-0 WCC) earned a dominant 7-0 victory over crosstown foe LMU (9-9. 4-3 WCC) Tuesday afternoon from Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
The Waves earned the doubles point and then claimed five two-set victories in singles with one match going to a deciding third set.
With the victory, the Waves clinched at least a share of the West Coast Conference (WCC) regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the WCC Tournament. Pepperdine can clinch the outright WCC title with a victory against Saint Mary's this Friday.
Doubles play began with Duru Söke and Shihomi Leong earning a 6-2 win on court three. The duo has been consistent at that position all season for the Waves, and now sit with a 9-3 record which includes a 3-0 mark in WCC play.
After falling on court two, the doubles point was set to be decided on court one. Živa Falkner and Sonja Zhiyenbayeva took care of business, earning a 6-4 win to put the Waves ahead 1-0. The duo also improved to 3-0 in WCC matches and are now 8-1 this spring as a tandem.
Söke improved to 12-0 on the year in singles with a 12-0 scoreline across two sets. Söke won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 position against Anastasia Bozova, quickly putting Pepperdine ahead 2-0.
Anastasiia Grechkina was next to earn a singles win for Pepperdine on court two, defeating Ada Piestrzynska, 6-3, 6-3. Grechkina is now 6-2 in her last eight singles decisions and has recorded a 3-1 record in conference play this season.
Chantal Sauvant continued her strong play to clinch the victory for Pepperdine at the No. 3 position. Sauvant picked up a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Kim-Michaela Zahraj, as she has now gone 6-0 in Pepperdine's six conference matches.Â
Falkner earned her fourth straight singles win next on court one, taking down Lidia Gonzalez by set scores of 7-5 and 6-4. Falkner's win gave Pepperdine a 5-0 advantage as she is now 3-1 in conference singles matches this season.
Leong won her first set 6-4 on court six, with set two coming down to a tiebreak against Camilia Samel-Druz. Leong asserted herself in the tiebreak, winning it 7-3 to put the Waves in front 6-0 in the match. Leong has also now won four straight singles matches and is now 3-1 in WCC play.
Rounding out the Waves' perfect afternoon was Alexia Harmon on court five, who won the first set 6-3 before falling 5-7 in set two. With the third set being a 10-point tiebreak, Harmon hung on for a 10-8 win to bring the final scoreline to 7-0. Harmon is now riding a 10-match singles winning streak and is a perfect 4-0 in conference play this season.
Pepperdine has now won 28 straight matches against the Lions dating back to the 2003 campaign.
