MALIBU, Calif. — No. 9 Pepperdine women's tennis (16-4, 7-0 WCC) secured the West Coast Conference (WCC) Regular Season Championship with a 6-0 victory over Saint Mary's (7-13, 3-5 WCC) Friday afternoon from Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
The Waves have now won their 14th consecutive WCC Regular Season title and 13th outright. Pepperdine has won at least a share of every regular season crown in the conference's history, as the WCC began awarding a regular season champion in the 2012 season following the implementation of a round robin conference schedule.
Pepperdine will be the top seed for the WCC Tournament next week (April 23-25), held at Green Valley Country Club in Fairfield, Calif. The Waves will play in the WCC Semifinals Friday at 3 p.m., looking to advance to the Championship match Saturday at 2 p.m. A full bracket will be released by the conference following the conclusion of the regular season this weekend.
The Waves conclude the regular season with a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play and will enter the postseason riding a five-match winning streak.
Pepperdine took the doubles point and won on all five singles courts in two sets, to take the match 6-0 in under two hours. With the Gaels having only five healthy players available, Pepperdine also submitted a five-player singles lineup, foregoing a default win at the No. 6 position.
With Saint Mary's defaulting court three doubles, the Waves needed just one win on either court one or two to claim the doubles point. Sonja Zhiyenbayeva and Živa Falkner made quick work of Sophie Stanton and Sofia Daryaie, winning 6-0 at the No. 1 position. The duo, currently ranked No. 14 in the ITA doubles rankings, has now posted a 9-1 record in their first collegiate season as a pair.
Anastasiia Grechkina and Chantal Sauvant saw their match go unfinished on court two, while holding a 3-2 advantage.
Grechkina was the first to secure her singles win on court two, defeating Elif Tuana Gunal, 6-1, 6-3. Grechkina concludes the regular season with a 9-5 singles record this spring and 4-1 mark in WCC play. She has now won her last four singles matches and is 7-2 in her last nine decisions.
Falkner followed up with a 6-0, 6-1 win on court one, improving her to 9-6 on the season. Her personal winning streak is now up to five matches, as she also boasts a 4-1 mark in conference play this spring.
Clinching the team victory for the Waves was Chantal Sauvant on court three, taking down Madison Weekley, 6-0, 6-1. Sauvant has won eight straight matches and has posted a 12-4 singles record in her debut collegiate campaign. She has also posted a 7-0 WCC record as the lone Wave with more than five conference wins this season.
Alexia Harmon was next on court four, winning her 11th straight match. Harmon defeated Sydney Wilson, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 position to extend Pepperdine's lead in the match. She now concludes the regular season with a 13-2 singles record and perfect 5-0 mark against WCC opponents.
Shihomi Leong finished the job for the Waves, claiming a 6-1, 6-2 win on court five over Sophie Stanton. Leong has now won her fifth straight match and has logged a 4-1 record in conference matches this season.
