SAN BRUNO, Calif. — No. 25 Pepperdine men's tennis earned a pair of West Coast Conference (WCC) weekly awards, announced today by the conference.
Lasse Poertner was named WCC Singles Player of the Week, while
Edward Winter &
Hugh Winter claimed WCC Doubles Team of the Week.
Both Poertner in singles and the Winter brothers in doubles went 2-0 on the week against No. 17 Arizona and No. 24 Arizona State, as the two wins marked the first weekly accolades of the season for the Waves.
Poertner dropped just four games across four sets on the week, picking up a pair of two-set victories against the Wildcats and Sun Devils. Beginning against No. 17 Arizona on Friday, Poertner earned a (6-3, 6-0) win on court three. Returning against No. 24 Arizona State on Sunday, the sophomore cruised to a (6-1, 6-0) victory on three to help propel the Waves to a 4-0 team win. Poertner is now 3-2 on the dual match season in singles.
Edward and
Hugh Winter paired together in doubles for the first time this dual match season against Arizona, picking up a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 position for the Waves. Taking the momentum into Sunday against Arizona State, the duo helped the Waves secure the doubles point with a 6-2 win at flight two. The wins marked the first two doubles victories of the season for Edward, with Hugh improving to 3-0 on the campaign.
The Waves return to Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center this afternoon at 2 p.m., taking on South Florida.
