PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves dominated in the first set, led by an impressive performance from James Eadie, who went a perfect six-for-six while attacking. Pepperdine's attacking could not be contained, with the team hitting a .600 on 15 kills, compared to Stanford's .179 on 12 kills. Gabe Dyer dished out 12 assists while also joining in on two blocks and adding an ace from the service line. Ryan Barnett tabbed five kills on eight swings also adding a service ace to secure set one, 25-16.
Throughout the second set, both teams would struggle to find their footing, hitting below a .200 percentage. A scoring run from Barnett would put the Waves up at 18-14, but the Cardinal would come within one after a 3-0 Stanford run. Two service aces from Aidan Tune gave Pepperdine momentum to overpower Stanford's efforts to make a comeback. The Waves kept the opposition to only a .000 hitting percentage, only allowing five total kills throughout. Kills from Cole Hartke and a solo block from Eadie allowed the Waves to take set two, 25-20.
The third set was evenly matched, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. Even though the Waves were more efficient on offense, the Cardinal's blocking would deny any attempt at a Pepperdine lead. As a team, Stanford tabbed 14 kills on a .259 hitting percentage compared to the Waves' 11 kills on a .280 success rate, but the Cardinal's three blocks proppelled them ahead. The opposition was ultimately able to take set three, 25-23.
During set four, Pepperdine's two denials and three service aces were hard to contain. Hartke served two aces and assisted on both rejections at the net while Barnett's efficient four kills and three digs gave the Waves an early lead. Pepperdine was able to maintain their distance from Stanford throughout the set with three kills from Eadie and two dumps over the net from Gabe Dyer. The Waves' sustained momentum allowed them to take set three, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.
