Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | by Pepperdine Athletics

Offense Stalled at Stockton in Loss to Pacific

The Pepperdine women's basketball team lost 41-68 to Pacific Saturday afternoon in Stockton.

The Waves (8-15, 3-11) got off to a slow start and despite a comeback in the second quarter, could not overcome Pacific's (12-13, 8-7) pace of play in Saturday's matinee game.

BIG WAVES

Senior Makena Mastora (Alameda, Calif.) was the only Wave in double digits on the afternoon with 11 points, grabbing two rebounds and a steal.

Senior Megan Harkey (Summerfield, N.C.) had the best afternoon on the glass with six rebounds, scoring four herself with an assist.

Senior Emerita Mashaire (Helsinki, FInland) tallied six points with five rebounds.

KEY STATS

The Waves had 25 turnovers that the Tigers were able to convert into 27 points.

Only 47 field goal attempts from Pepperdine ties the season low, compared to Pacific's 64 FGA.

Pepperdine sank six from distance compared to Pacific's five.

RECAP

Pepperdine struck first to start the game off with a layup from Makena Mastora. Two points from senior Maggie Vick (Morristown, Tenn.) and a free throw from Freshman Chloe Sotell (Samford, Conn.) gave the Waves a 5-2 lead two minutes into the game. For the remainder of the quarter, all offense was halted by the Tiger's defense as Pacific went on a 20-3 scoring run, interrupted only by a Sotell three at the tail end of the 10 minutes. With work to do, the Waves trailed 8-22 headed into the second quarter.

Coming out of the break swinging, Pepperdine got right back in the game just as quick as they had fallen behind. An 11-0 run highlighted by three from Makena, senior Malia Mastora (Alameda, Calif.) and senior Helena Friend (Huntington Beach, Calif.) put Pepperdine within one possession with 7:33 left to go in the half. A handful of turnovers would limit scoring opportunities in the latter half of the quarter and as shots stopped finding the basket, Pacific was able to create a little breathing room. Headed into the second half, the Waves trailed 21-29.

With only three baskets from the field in the third along with seven turnovers, the Waves could not control the pace of the game. After an opening three point basket from Makena, Pepperdine went nearly five minutes without another field goal. In that span, Pacific was in their own rut and it was still a five point game as Mashaire made it 30-35 with more than half the time gone in the quarter. A 13-2 run would squash any Wave momentum and with one quarter to go, it was 32-48 Pacific.

Another seven turnovers in the fourth made any attempts at a comeback difficult for Pepperdine. Outscored 9-20 in the quarter, the Tigers kept their foot on the gas to finish the game.

The Waves fall in Stockton 41-68.
