RECAP

Playing Portland just nine days ago, Pepperdine was out to show they were a better team than the result in the Chiles Center. Kicking things off for the Waves offensively, Sotell hit a jumper and her first three of the game to make it a 6-5 game halfway through the first with Portland narrowly holding the lead. With a 10-5 lead at 4:02, that would be the largest of the entire game for the Pilots as the Waves got to work. Senior Megan Harkey (Summerfield, N.C) led the way for Pepperdine with seven points to close out the quarter as Pepperdine had jumped ahead 19-16 after the opening ten minutes.

Pepperdine did not lose any momentum in the second quarter, shooting .500 from the field, including .600 from distance. Senior Ornela Muca (Athens, Greece) sank three from beyond the arc in the second quarter, scoring all of her 11 points in a 10-minute span to keep the Waves in front. Makena contributed four of her own in the quarter, staying aggressive offensively as Pepperdine went to the locker room at the half with a 38-36 point lead.

Makena's sister Malia led her team coming out of the break, hitting both of her threes in the opening minutes for a team-leading six points in the third quarter. Senior Helena Friend (Huntington Beach, Calif.) added her own three to the mix as the Waves shot .500 or better from distance for the second straight quarter. With one left to play in regulation, the Waves held on to the lead 53-52.

Senior Emerita Mashaire (Helsinki, Finland) who played over 40 minutes for the Waves tonight, opened the scoring for either team with a layup, putting Pepperdine up three with 8:50 to go. Going toe-to-toe the rest of the quarter, the Waves found themselves down four with 1:28 to go. Two free throws from Friend made it a one possession game, but a layup by the Pilots stretched their lead back to four. With under a minute left, Sotell cashed a three with the help of Mashaire to make it a 65-64 game. A missed Portland free throw on the other end gave Pepperdine the opportunity to tie it up, down 66-64 with 20 seconds to go. Once again, it was the duo of Mashaire and Sotell that would give the freshman an open basket to take the game to overtime.

Trading layups with the Pilots at the beginning of overtime, Sotell scored her final points before fouling out for the remainder of the game. Tied at 70, Portland would score five uninterrupted to give them the lead with 24 seconds to go. Scoring with just four seconds left on the clock, the Waves were forced to foul and two made free throws iced the game for Portland as Pepperdine hit their ninth three of the game as time expired, falling 75-77.
