SERIES VS. PACIFIC: The Waves are 9-19 all-time against the Tigers, including just 1-11 in Stockton. Earlier this season, freshman Chloe Sotell (Samford, Conn.) led the team with 10 points while senior Makena Mastora (Alameda, Calif.) led the defensive charge with two steals on the night.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Since playing Pepperdine 16 days ago, Pacific is 1-3, with their sole win coming against Oregon St. in an overtime 67-66 win. Liz Smith has led the Tigers, averaging 15.8 points over the last four. Anaya James and Elizabeth Elliott are also in double digits for Pacific, averaging 13.5 and 12.5 points respectively. Defensively, Sydney Ward has the most rebounds with 23 while James has nine steals. Encompassing the entire season, Pacific tends to come out of the gates swinging, scoring considerably more in the first half than the second.
SERIES VS. PORTLAND: While Portland holds a 40-38 record against Pepperdine, the Waves have a 24-13 advantage in Malibu. Last week, the Waves dropped a 52-76 game in Portland as the latter part of a two-game road trip. Seniors Ella Brubaker and Emerita Mashaire had 12 points a piece on the night, leading the team.
SCOUTING THE PILOTS: With just nine days between the matchup in the Chiles Center and Firestone Fieldhouse, Portland only had one game between their matchups with the Waves against San Diego. Senior Maisie Burnham led the Pilots in their narrow 66-64 victory with 22 points, above her 16.5 average on the season. The Pilots are coming up on a month since their last loss, which was on the road to Gonzaga Jan. 16 with a nail biter of a score 65-66.
LAST TIME OUT: Coming home for just a couple days before hitting the road again, Pepperdine played San Francisco at Firestone Fieldhouse Feb. 6. Sotell led the Waves with 13 points while senior Maggie Vick led the team on rebounds, grabbing five. A large first quarter deficit was too much to rally back from and while the Waves were not inaccurate with their shots, turnovers limited the amount of shots they were able to get up, leaving Pepperdine to struggle to keep up with the Dons nine three-pointers on the night.
IN THE WCC: The sole freshman on the roster appears in multiple categories among the top 25, including points per game (#24), assists per game (#15), assist/turnover ratio (#6) and three's per game (#3). For threes per game, she is third amongst all players with an average of 2.1 a game as well as 4th in the same category when just regarding conference games. Senior Makena Mastora is 22nd in rebounding for all games with an average of 4.8 a game. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Megan Harkey is 7th in the conference for blocks, averaging 1.1 a game.
SOARING SOTELL: As the only freshman on the team this season, Chloe Sotell is the Waves' leading scorer with 229 total points, serving a crucial role in her inaugural year playing collegiate basketball. Sitting fourth in the conference games with an average of 2.1 threes per game, Chloe is only one of two freshmen in the top 25 across the entire conference. the Connecticut native has 12 games so far this season with double digits, averaging 10.4 a game.
BREWING WITH BRUBAKER: Tying her highest D-I performance three separate times this season, the senior is having her best year yet with the Waves. Outside of performing offensively as the Waves' second highest scorer this season, the Washington native leads the team with 27 steals this season, putting her at 20th in the conference with an average of 1.2 a game.
AT THE HELM: Katie Faulkner is entering her first year as the head coach of the Waves. Previously, Faulkner served as an assistant at the University of Washington for three seasons. During her tenure, Faulkner took Washington to the WNIT Final four in the program's first postseason berth in six years. Prior to joining the Huskies, the Montana alumnae served as an assistant coach at Oregon State from 2016-2021. In those five seasons, the Beavers garnered a 118-37 record while going to the NCAA tournament four years in a row, including a 2018 Elite Eight appearance.
