PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the two squads' second meeting, energy was high throughout the first set with 15 tied scores and 6 lead changes. The Waves and Lopes went point-for-point throughout the whole set until Grand Canyon was able to secure a substantial lead at 18-14. After a Pepperdine timeout, three kills from Ryan Barnett and one from Cole Hartke allowed the Waves to gain momentum on the court, coming within one of the Lopes. Both Dyer brothers added kills to tie the score at 23, and a service ace from George Dyer would propel the Waves ahead of the Lopes at 25-24. Attack and service errors on both ends caused the set to go to extra points, where James Eadie finished off the set at 30-28, in favor of Pepperdine.
Throughout the second set, there were 12 tied scores and three lead changes, making for a competitive match. Pepperdine outperformed the opposition, posting 18 kills on a .350 hitting percentage compared to 16 kills on a .289 success rate. The two teams trailed each other throughout the entire set, but Grand Canyon was able to move ahead after going on a 5-2 run at 22-18, where Pepperdine's attacking errors combined with the Lopes' kills proved to change the tide of the match. Barnett added another six kills in the second set while George Dyer went a perfect three-for-three attacking, but ultimately, Grand Canyon would take set two, 25-20.
Pepperdine maintained its lead throughout the entirety of set three, led by Barnett, who had eight kills on 13 swings. The Waves kept the Lopes to only 12 kills on a .235 clip while adding 14 on a .364 hitting percentage themselves. Ethan Hogan entered the match to assist on two blocks, also adding a kill, while Hartke tabbed four kills to push Pepperdine past any Grand Canyon attempt at catching up. A smash from Eadie closed out set three at 25-17.
In the fourth set, Grand Canyon was only able to produce 10 kills with a .259 hitting percentage, compared to Pepperdine's 18 on a .560 clip. The Waves attack was led by Hartke and Barnett, who each added five and six kills, respectively. Although the Lopes were able to serve three denials at the net, the Waves' efficient hitting allowed them to take set four, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.
