Pepperdine Heads Down PCH to Face LMU

The Pepperdine women's basketball team just plays one this week as they head down to Loyola Marymount University for the PCH cup game Saturday.
GAME #27 – Pepperdine vs. LMU in the Gersten Pavilion with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m.

SERIES VS. LMU: Holding the advantage overall on the series, the Waves have an edge over the Lions 26-18 in Los Angeles with the last win coming in the 2021-22 season. Currently, Pepperdine is fighting with LMU to play in the Friday game in the WCC tournament in Las Vegas. The bottom two seeds will play Thursday while the rest of the field gets an extra day of rest, starting their tournament journey on the following day. The Waves are one game behind the Lions, but a win tomorrow will give them the advantage with the tiebreaker falling on Pepperdine's side.
SCOUTING THE LIONS: Since last playing LMU, the Lions are 2-4 with wins over San Francisco and Santa Clara. Both wins came on the road as graduate Nadia Evans continues to lead the way for her team, averaging 15.8 points per game, including 29 against the Dons. Defensively, sophomore Maya Hernandez is the standout with 52 steals and 23 blocks on the season, averaging 7.4 rebounds a game.
LAST TIME OUT: It was once again freshman Chloe Sotell (Samford, Conn.) leading the Waves in the most recent game against Saint Mary's with 17 points, hitting four from distance. With the lowest number of field goal attempts on the year, the Waves struggled to find shots against the Gaels, falling 69-54.
IN THE WCC: The sole freshman on the roster appears in multiple categories among the top 25, including points per game (#25), assists per game (#11), assist/turnover ratio (#14) and three's per game (#4). For threes per game, she is fourth amongst all players with an average of 2.0 a game as well as 4th in the same category when just regarding conference games. Senior Makena Mastora is 21st in rebounding for all games with an average of 4.8 a game. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Megan Harkey is 8th in the conference for blocks, averaging 1.1 a game.
SOARING SOTELL: As the only freshman on the team this season, Chloe Sotell is the Waves' leading scorer with 274 total points, serving a crucial role in her inaugural year playing collegiate basketball. Sitting fourth in the conference games with an average of 2.0 threes per game, Chloe is only one of two freshmen in the top 25 across the entire conference. the Connecticut native has 14 games so far this season with double digits, averaging 10.5 a game.
AT THE HELM: Katie Faulkner is entering her first year as the head coach of the Waves. Previously, Faulkner served as an assistant at the University of Washington for three seasons. During her tenure, Faulkner took Washington to the WNIT Final four in the program's first postseason berth in six years. Prior to joining the Huskies, the Montana alumnae served as an assistant coach at Oregon State from 2016-2021. In those five seasons, the Beavers garnered a 118-37 record while going to the NCAA tournament four years in a row, including a 2018 Elite Eight appearance.
