Pepperdine Goes Toe-to-Toe with Oregon State

MALIBU – The Pepperdine men's basketball team kept things close with Oregon State Thursday night but Beaver free throws iced the game for an 84-78 Waves loss.

BIG WAVES
  • Boubacar Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/USC) led Pepperdine with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double while dishing out four assists, blocking two shots and gathering two steals.
  • Moe Odum (Bronx, N.Y./Pacific) lit up the second half, scoring 17 of his total 19 points in the latter stanza while adding two rebounds and seven assists.
  • Stefan Todorovic (Belgrade, Serbia/SMU/USF) totaled 10 points, three boards, three assists and a steal.

KEY STATS
  • Pepperdine fared better from beyond the arc at 50% while Oregon State shot 31% from the same range.
  • The Waves committed one less turnover than OSU (8-9) but the Beavers scored more from Pepperdine mistakes (8-7).
  • OSU outrebounded the Waves at a rate of 40-27 while earning 27 second-chance points to Pepperdine's 14 and cashed in 50 points from the paint while the Waves had only 11.

RECAP
The Beavers scored first, but Pepperdine came out strong with a Boubacar Coulibaly post move and early free throws to get up 5-2 in the opening minutes. Oregon State's inside game had some trouble connecting on short bumps and second chance opportunities before Danilo Dozic hit a three from the wing to extend the Waves' lead. Pepperdine would lead the majority of the half but the Beavers grabbed a narrow advantage with four minutes to go and the two teams would trade leads until the half buzzer sounded, seeing OSU go into the locker rooms on top at 38-37.

Moe Odum got the Waves going after the intermission as the Beavers would lead the entire second half of play– albeit at a narrow margin. The Waves didn't allow any notable scoring runs from the opposition, but the final rebounding numbers would prove to be the real killer as OSU went on to earn 40 total boards compared to Pepperdine's 27. Zion Bethea and Dozic traded threes around the seven-minute mark and the lead stayed around five and six points but Oregon State iced the contest by heading to the free throw line and ran out of Firestone Fieldhouse with the 84-78 win.
