The Pepperdine baseball team fell in the final game against Utah Monday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
With 11 runners left on base throughout the game, the Waves (0-4) could not find a way to put the ball in play with runners in scoring position, losing the fourth and final game against the Utes 6-1.
BIG WAVES
Junior catcher
Max Aude (Woodland Hills, Calif.) had the Waves only hit for extra bases this afternoon, eventually finding home to be Pepperdine's sole run.
Freshman first baseman
Zach Woodson (Long Beach, Calif.) got his first start at first base, tallying two hits and an RBI.
Freshman left fielder
Brodey Bitove (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) went 3-for-3 at the plate today, also taking a walk in his first collegiate start.
RECAP
Shutting Utah down for the first two innings, freshman RHP
Nate Tichy (San Jose, Calif.) struck out two in the scoreless innings. Despite two hits in the bottom half of the first two, Pepperdine was not able to convert base runners into runs scored, ending the second locked with Utah 0-0.
A two run shot over the right field wall gave the Utes a 2-0 lead in the third and the Waves did not answer in the bottom half of the inning, leading to two scoreless innings on both sides of the ball in the fourth and fifth.
Damage was minimized in the top of the sixth and even with one runner crossing home for Utah, sophomore
Matt Queen (Manhattan, N.Y.) got his team out of a bases-loaded situation to keep the deficit at 3-0 headed into the bottom half of the inning.
With the only extra base hit of the day for Pepperdine, Aude smacked a ball into right, putting himself in scoring position. Two outs on the board, Woodson dropped a ball into center field for a single, allowing Aude to score for Woodson's first collegiate RBI.
Utah responded with a vengeance in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three additional runs. Pepperdine had hits in all three remaining innings, but could not convert any to runs as the Waves dropped the fourth and final game to the Utes 6-1.
