The Pepperdine baseball team dropped the Sunday afternoon game to Utah 10-4 at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Despite two home runs, one being a three-run homer, the Waves (0-3) struggled to find a way to shut down the Utes' (3-0) bats.
BIG WAVES
Senior second baseman
Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) had the first run for the Waves in the bottom of the third inning, hitting his second home run of the season in the first series of the year.
Sophomore third baseman
Finley Buckner (Oak Park, Calif.) hit a three-run home run in the sixth for his first of the year.
Freshman RHP
Ryan Rios (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) did not allow any runs in 2.1 innings pitched with two hits and a strikeout in his collegiate debut.
RECAP
With runs in all three first innings so far this series, Utah struck first with three in the first. No response from Pepperdine in the bottom half of the inning let the Utes continue their offensive momentum, tacking on four more in the second to make it a 7-0 game by the end of the second inning.
The Waves' first run would be courtesy of Nunez, who hit his second home run of the series in the bottom of the third to make it a 7-1 game. Coming into the game in the middle of the fourth inning, Rios put up two donuts for Pepperdine's defense in the fifth and sixth innings, keeping it a 7-1 game.
Back-to-back singles by redshirt Sophomore first baseman
Max Bernal (Clovis, Calif.) and senior DH Devon Walcyzkowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) in the bottom half of the sixth inning put two on for Buckner to send a ball sailing over the left field wall at a 101 exit velocity for his first homer of the year. With three scored in the bottom of the sixth, Pepperdine trailed 10-4.
Two more innings without a run for the Utes gave the Waves space to try and build a comeback. Two Utah errors put runners on third and second with two out, but Buckner was not able to repeat his last at bat with a homerun, ending the eighth with no runs scored.
Freshman RHP Austin Plisinkski (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) closed out the game in the top of the ninth without another run scored, giving Pepperdine one last chance in the bottom half of the inning. Unfortunately, the Waves could not climb out of the six-run hole, losing game three of the series 10-4.
