Errors Drown Waves in Loss to Utes

The Pepperdine baseball team lost the second of four games against Utah Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The Waves (0-2) took a 2-1 lead over the Utes (2-0) by the end of the first before giving five runs on three defensive errors, putting the game out of reach with a final score of 11-2.

BIG WAVES

Senior Andrew Savage (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) had two hits on the afternoon, the only Wave to do so this afternoon.

Senior Devon Walcyzkowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) recorded the first RBI and secured his first hit in nearly two seasons, returning from injury this Spring.

Freshman Danny Cook (Monument, Colo.) secured the other RBI of the afternoon, starting at second base for the first start of his collegiate career.

RECAP

Getting on the board in the top of the first, Utah took a 1-0 lead on two singles, challenging the Waves early.

Pepperdine responded with patience in the batter's box, walking Rubin. In just his second game back since April 11, 2023, Walczykowski dropped a single into left field, scoring Rubin and advancing redshirt sophomore Max Bernal (Clovis, Calif.) who reached first on his own hit. With the second walk of the inning, graduate Nick Upstil (Huntington Beach, Calif.) loaded the bases. For the lead, Cook hit a sac fly into left field, scoring Bernal and giving the Waves a 2-1 lead.

After tying it up in the top of the second, Utah was even with Pepperdine for the next two innings. The top of the fourth is when things began to unravel for the Waves. Three separate errors gave the Utes five unearned runs in the inning for a total of six, giving the visitor an 8-2 lead in the middle of the fourth inning.

The Waves were unable to respond offensively, recording only three hits, all in separate innings, for the remainder of the game.
