PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first set, Pepperdine kept UCSB to only seven kills, and to a negative hitting percentage. With three denials at the net by four separate Waves, the Gauchos were unable to keep up with Pepperdine's style of play.
George Dyer came out swinging, delivering five of his seven kills on the night in the first set, while
Ryan Barnett trailed close behind, adding four. Pepperdine maintained its lead the whole first set, taking it, 25-14.
In the second set, service errors plagued the Gauchos, with nine unsuccessful serves. Although UCSB was able to post 12 kills as opposed to Pepperdine's seven, three blocks from the Waves would stop any attempt at dropping a set. The Waves tabbed a .375 hitting percentage compared to the opposition's .250, allowing Pepperdine to take set two, 25-18.
Throughout set three, both teams were evenly matched, posting eight kills and three blocks. The Waves were more successful on their hitting attempts though, with a .125 success rate as opposed to Santa Barbara's -.037 hitting percentage.
James Eadie added four kills in the third set, while also having two rejections at the net while setter,
Gabe Dyer, added a kill and two blocks on top of his play-making duties. Barnett also had five digs, while
Matt Mazur had two aces from the service line. Six service errors from the home team would seal the deal, allowing Pepperdine to take the set, 25-17, and the match 3-0.
