The Pepperdine baseball team fell to Utah in the season opener, losing 3-1 in 10 innings at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (0-1) stayed even with the Utes (1-0) all game in offensive efficiency, but Utah broke it open in extra innings, scoring two in the top of the tenth to take game one of the 2025 season.

Senior
Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) hit a solo home run for the Waves' first at bat of the season, getting Pepperdine on the board in the first.
Redshirt Junior
Tommy Scavone (Pleasanton, Calif.) started for Pepperdine, pitching six innings while allowing only three hits and one run while striking out six.
Senior
Justin Rubin (Bryn Mawr, Penn.) was the only Wave with multiple hits today, recording two in four at bats.
RECAP
As the leadoff batter, Nunez started the 2025 season off with a bang for his entire squad. Sending a ball over the left field wall, the senior gave Pepperdine an ealy 1-0 lead with the solo home run in the top of the first.
On the mound, Scavone held things down defensively for the Waves, allowing only three hits through six innings. The Utes would hit their own solo home run in the top of the sixth, tying things up at 1-1.
Sophomore Colin Valentine (Dallas, Texas) pitched three, sending the game to the bottom of the ninth without a hit allowed. After nothing sparked in the ninth for Pepperdine, the game headed for extra innings.
Two hits and a costly Wave error in the top of the 10th allowed the Utes to score two without a response in the bottom half of the inning, Pepperdine fell 3-1 on opening day.
