MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (6-4-1, 3-0 WCC) shutout the Pacific Tigers (3-5-3, 0-2-1 WCC) with eight different Waves scoring in the 9-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
"It felt like one of those days where everything we did was fantastic," Head coach
Tim Ward said. "Not only girls scoring goals, but girls creating goals. Really proud of the unselfish nature of how we created those goals."
With seven goals in the first half, Pepperdine set a new record for goals in the first 45, previously held by six goals in a match against Pacific in 2017. The Waves tie their record for the most goals scored against a D1 opponent, scoring nine only one other time in the same matchup in 2017.
The scoring started early with
Tatum Wynalda's fourth of the year as she now has three matches in a row with a goal.
Megan Edelman threaded a ball to the senior for her first assist on the season.
Not even 10 minutes later,
Tabitha LaParl doubled the score with her second goal of the season.
From there, the floodgates opened as the Waves scored five more in the first half of play. Two of the next five were netted by
Julia Quinonez, who has now scored a brace in back-to-back games and has a total of eight goals on the season.
The last time a Wave scored multiple goals in consecutive games was nearly three decades ago in 1996, done so by Jennifer Peterson. Quinonez is also tied at the top for the most consecutive matches with a goal, with an active streak of five.
The seventh and final of the first half was the first to come off the bench as
Erin Zeile buried her first of the season and only second of her collegiate career.
At the break, women's soccer alumni and hall of fame inductee
Lynn Biyendolo ('15) was honored. As one of the best to ever represent the Waves, Biyendolo joins a legendary induction class as a current NWSL forward on the Seattle Reign.
With a slower second half, Pepperdine notched two more for a total of nine on the afternoon.
Ariana Markey is just the second freshman this year to score as she netted goal number eight for the Waves.
As the final exclamation point,
Sarah Spears scored goal nine for Pepperdine and the first of her collegiate career from a ball off the foot of
Layla Simon as she recorded her first assist as a Wave.
Up next, Pepperdine heads north to take on the Broncos of Santa Clara. The matchup against the projected conference champion and the co-conference champs of 2024 is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff with the live stream on ESPN+ (subscription required) as well as live stats available on
