Waves Take on Dons in Weekend Battle

The Pepperdine women's basketball team is on the road this weekend to face the San Francisco Dons before returning back to Malibu for the week.
GAME #14 – Saturday (Jan. 4) Pepperdine vs.San Francisco (7-6, 4-0) in the War Memorial at the Sobrato Center with a 2 p.m. tip-off.

SERIES VS. SAN FRANCISCO: The Waves are 42-47 overall against the Dons, including a 16-25 record in San Francisco. In the last game against the Dons on Feb. 1 of last season, senior Emerita Mashaire posted six points, leading all returners. The last win on the road against the Dons came in the 2019-2020 season with a final score of 70-64.
SCOUTING THE DONS: Off to their best start in West Coast Conference play since the 1995-96 season, San Francisco is currently the only undefeated team at 4-0. At home, the Dons have defeated Gonzaga and Saint Mary's while beating Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara on the road. Averaging 14.2 points per game, senior Freja Werth leads her team in points. Her best non conference performance came against Columbia with 24 points while her best WCC performance was just below her high at 22 points vs. Santa Clara.
LAST TIME OUT: Improving to 4-1 at home, the Waves grabbed the first WCC win of the season against San Diego Thursday night. Defeating the Toreros 63-49, seniors Ella Brubaker and Makena Mastora combined for 27 points, five assists, and seven rebounds. Freshman Chloe Sotell was nearing double digits in most stat categories, tallying eight points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and five steals.
THE SQUAD: Pepperdine returns eight on the 12-person roster. New faces include transfers Malia and Makena Mastora, sisters from Cal State San Marcos and Saint Mary's, respectively. Other new faces include graduate Ornela Muca from Cal and freshman Chloe Sotell from Stamford, Conn.
SOARING SOTELL: Sitting sixth in the conference in assists through four games, Chloe is growing into her own and serving a pivotal role as her first season of collegiate basketball gets underway. The Connecticut native leads the team with 29 three-pointers, averaging 10.8 points over the season, including 12.8 the past five games.
BREWING WITH BRUBAKER: Tying her highest D-I performance three separate times this season, the senior is shaping up to have her best year yet with the Waves. Leading the team, the Washington native has 164 points, averaging 12.6 a game. The Washington native has started seven of the last eight games, playing all but one minute against Gonzaga Dec. 30.
AT THE HELM: Katie Faulkner is entering her first year as the head coach of the Waves. Previously, Faulkner served as an assistant at the University of Washington for three seasons. During her tenure, Faulkner took Washington to the WNIT Final four in the program's first postseason berth in six years. Prior to joining the Huskies, the Montana alumnae served as an assistant coach at Oregon State from 2016-2021. In those five seasons, the Beavers garnered a 118-37 record while going to the NCAA tournament four years in a row, including a 2018 Elite Eight appearance.
