The #20 Pepperdine women's soccer team got a second ranked win in a week, defeating Georgetown 2-1 Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field.
After tying Georgetown in the first ever matchup between the two teams in 2023, Pepperdine wanted a win this year. With the Hoyas being 3-0-1 on the year without a goal scored against them, this was a tall ask. Taking down #3 UCLA last Sunday and appearing in the top-25 for the first time all season this week, the Waves were up for the challenge.
Pepperdine (4-2-1) started in the same formation as last game, giving graduate Megan Edelman (Danville, Calif.) her second start of the season. The Hoyas (3-1-1) started strong, pressing the back line early.
It was an offense-heavy game with a total of 28 shots between the two teams. The first to find the back of the net would come from the Waves. For the first goal against the Hoyas all season, redshirt junior Tabitha LaParl (Lakewood, Calif.) fought her way to the top of the six-yard box on the right side. Burying the ball into the left side of the goal, the junior tallied her second goal on the season to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead.
As the game was dwindling into halftime, the Hoyas took notes from Laparl, placing the ball in the net the exact same way Laparl did on the opposite side of the six yard box to find the equalizer.
The second half saw a lot of dangerous chances from both teams. For just the first time this season, the Waves were able to find the back of the net multiple times in 90 minutes.
Despite only having two corner kicks to Georgetown's eight, Pepperdine was able to capitalize in the last 15 minutes of the game. The service from junior Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) found sophomore Peyton Leonard (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and for the second game in a row, Leonard would provide the game winner off her head.
"Such an amazing performance by the Waves today! Georgetown has an amazing soccer tradition and we think the world of their program," Head coach Tim Ward said. "For us to come all this way and pick up a win in a game that required all of our concentration, trust and spirit, we couldn't be more proud of this Wave team today!"
