The #19 Pepperdine women's soccer team had five different Waves find the back of the net in Friday afternoon's 5-0 shutout of Fresno State.
The Waves (5-2-2) took time to find footing offensively, but successfully held the Bulldogs (5-2-1) from gaining momentum on the other end. Breaking through in the 39th minute, redshirt sophomore Kyra Murphy (Riverside, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season and third of her collegiate career with an assist from sophomore Ava Verplancke (Irvine, Calif.).
Right before halftime, junior Erin Zeile (Westlake Village, Calif.) doubled the lead for the Waves. Originating from a shot from redshirt junior Tabitha LaParl (Lakewood, Calif.), Zeile took advantage of the rebound off Fresno State's keeper, tucking the ball into the net to make it 2-0 at half.
The Waves shut the Bulldogs down entirely in the second half, allowing no shots from the opponent while scoring three goals. For her third goal of the season sophomore Peyton Leonard (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) scored the way she knows how, off of her head. The sophomore scored her first collegiate goal against the same team in 2023, now tallying four goals in her career as a Wave so far. 58 minutes into the game, Pepperdine led Fresno State 3-0.
Goal number four came from sophomore Julia Quinonez. The reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year scored off her right foot, sending the ball to goal as she was sliding to the ground and gliding it past the goalkeeper.
The fifth and final goal was off the foot of senior Caroline Coleman (Mission Hills, Kan.) For the second goal of her collegiate career and first of the year, Coleman rocketed the ball into the upper right corner of the net, putting an exclamation mark on the end of the match.
For the first time all season, the Waves scored more than two goals in a match. The last match Pepperdine scored five or more goals was October 27, 2023 where they blanked conference foe San Diego 7-0.
#19 Pepperdine won with a final score of 5-0.
