The Pepperdine women's soccer team beat UC San Diego 1-0 Thursday afternoon, climbing to an overall record of 2-1 ahead of the home opener Sunday.
Battling all game, the Waves (2-1) would hold even with the Tritons (0-3), staying toe-to-toe with shots on goal but holding the advantage 6-to-4.
The lone goal of the game came in the 37th minute from sophomore Ava Verplancke (Irvine, Calif.). As her first collegiate goal, Verplancke threaded the ball between the goalie and left goalpost with an unassisted strike from outside the top of the box.
Three freshmen started the game, including goalkeeper Jillian Medvecky (Concord Township, Ohio), who recorded four saves. In only her second game played and first started, Medvecky recorded her first collegiate shutout.
Triton Soccer Stadium had a familiar face in waiting as graduate Skylar Enge, who graduated from Pepperdine last year, is a starting midfielder for UCSD. In her three years with Pepperdine, Enge appeared in 51 games for the Waves.
