MALIBU Calif. — Pepperdine women's basketball head coach
Katie Faulkner announced the hiring of
Erika Bean,
Brian Porth,
Joslyn Tinkle and
Olivia Reins to her coaching staff on Friday.
The quartet of assistant coaches has experience coaching at all levels of the sport and significant West Coast ties. Bean, Porth and Tinkle will serve as assistant coaches, while Reins will assume the director of basketball operations role at Pepperdine.
No stranger to the West Coast Conference, Bean comes to Malibu after serving as Gonzaga's Assistant Coach/Director of Player Development. Last season, Bean was part of a Zags team that finished with a 32-4 record, went undefeated in WCC regular-season play, hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament as the 4-seed and made the Sweet Sixteen.
She was elevated to an assistant coaching role prior to the 2023-24 season after serving as a graduate assistant for two years at Gonzaga. In her first two seasons, she helped the Bulldogs make two NCAA Tournament appearances, and win back-to-back WCC regular-season titles and the 2022 WCC Tournament title. Gonzaga won at least 27 games in every season Bean was part of the program.
As a player, Bean was a four-year varsity letter-winner at Utah and graduated with a degree in kinesiology in 2019 before playing overseas. Upon graduating from Utah, Bean ranked fourth all-time in career assists, which she accrued in 126 career games (91 of which she started). She also earned her master's in sport and athletic administration in 2022 at Gonzaga.
"Erika is known for her prolific playing career at Utah, but people who are close to Erika speak more on her work ethic, integrity, smarts, and steadfast demeanor," Faulkner said. "She has been part of championship-caliber programs, developed all-conference student-athletes, and knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. She is a rising star in this business and I feel so grateful to have her with us at Pepperdine."
Coming to Pepperdine from Southern Methodist University, Brian Porth has experience at every level of the sport, ranging from the professional ranks, to the NCAA and NAIA, to the high school and AAU levels. Last season, Porth served as the Director of Scouting and Video Analytics/Assistant Coach for his alma mater. He started his career at SMU as the Video Coordinator and Assistant Camp Director from 2007-10 after graduating with a history degree in 2007.
Prior to his second stint at SMU, Porth was the head coach of the Arizona Elite AAU Basketball Club for eight years. He led the team by managing budgets, overseeing player development, running social media and helping increase the club from 18 athletes to more than 100 while expanding the club from two to 10 full teams. Also while in Arizona, Porth was the head coach of Chaparral High School, located in Scottsdale, Ariz. A two-time region coach of the year, Porth led the Firebirds to a 5A state title in 2018.
Porth's five years of professional basketball experience include a two-year stint as an advanced scout for the Utah Jazz, plus three years as the New York Liberty's head scout from 2019-22. During that time with the Liberty, he helped the team make back-to-back postseason appearances in 2021-22. Overseas, he also was the head coach for Coventry University in Coventry, England from 2010-11 and the University of Oxford from 2008-09.
"I have known Brian for many years, and he is sharp as he is knowledgeable," Faulkner said. "In his time he has coached and developed some of the top names and high school talent in the country. His background brings a variety of experiences, but his character and humility set him apart. While new to Pepperdine, he is in no way new to what this program stands for, and I look forward to partnering with him."
Arriving in Malibu after spending the last three seasons at the University of Montana, Joslyn Tinkle was an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Lady Griz. This past season, she helped Montana post a 23-10 record, which included a WNIT berth and the program's first postseason win since 2014. In Tinkle's first year in Missoula, she helped the Lady Griz have a seven-win improvement during the 2021-22 season.
Tinkle began her coaching career in Missoula after spending five years in the private sector. She is part of the Pacific Northwest's foremost basketball families: Her father, Wayne, is the current men's basketball coach at Oregon State after leading the Griz for four seasons, and her mother Lisa McLeod is a Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Her younger siblings Elle and Tres starred at Gonzaga and Oregon State, respectively.
As a player, Tinkle was a four-year varsity letter-winner under legendary head coach Tara VanDerveer at Stanford, where she was part of three Final Four teams and four Pac-10/12 Conference champions. A McDonald's All-American from Big Sky High School, located in Missoula, Mont., Tinkle was selected to the United States U18 team that won gold in 2008. She graduated from Stanford in 2013 with a double major in sociology and communications, then went on to play for the WNBA's Seattle Storm and eventually in three different overseas leagues.
"Joslyn is a tremendous addition to the staff," Faulkner said. "She brings an enriched basketball history, having played at Stanford and professionally, recruited top talent from across the country, and is part of winning cultures wherever she goes. But deeper than that, she is a joy to be around and is a selfless competitor. I'm excited for our young women to have the opportunity to develop under her leadership."
Making her return to Pepperdine, Reins ('21) spent last season as the University of Nevada's Assistant Recruiting Coordinator, where she served as the marketing liaison, oversaw team managers, worked closely with Nevada's director of basketball operations and helped compile scouting reports. Prior to Nevada, Reins served as a graduate assistant coach at Division II Concordia University Irvine in her first postgraduate coaching role. The Golden Eagles finished third in the PacWest Conference and were the runner-up at the PacWest Conference Tournament during Reins' year in Irvine.
Reins got her start working in athletics at Pepperdine, where she was part of the athletic facilities and events staff for three years. Reins earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Pepperdine in 2021 and her master's degree in coaching and exercise sciences from CUI.
"Pepperdine is an incredible place, and I love that Olivia is a proud alum," Faulkner said. "She has a heart for the Malibu community that is infectious and powerful, and exactly what this program needs. That, combined with her incredible ability to organize, problem-solve, and connect with people makes her the perfect fit for this position. We are blessed to have Olivia join us."
