MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team honored 12 on senior day in Saturday afternoon's loss to Portland.
Â
The Waves' (12-35, 6-14) struggle to convert hits to runs continued as they kept pace with the Pilots (30-17, 15-5) as both teams knocked 12 hits, but Pepperdine would strand 14 in a 10-3 loss.
Â
BIG WAVES
Â
Senior Connor Walsh (Niceville, Fla.) was a perfect 4-for-4 today, including a double and an RBI.
Â
Junior Justin Rubin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) hit .400 on the afternoon with two singles.
Â
RECAP
Â
The first two innings were scoreless from both sides as graduate RHP Matthew Boyer (Edwardsville, Ill.) recorded four strikeouts.
Â
With three hits and two defensive Pepperdine errors, Portland would score first and take a 3-0 lead by the end of the third inning. Two doubles in the fourth extended the pilot lead to 5-0.
Â
Responding in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Waves got within striking distance of the Pilots. Two singles by Rubin and graduate infielder Brady Renck (Longmont, Colo) put two on with nobody out. In one of his four hits of the afternoon, Walsh dropped a double into left field, scoring Rubin and advancing Renck to third base. The third single of the inning belonged to senior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and runners were on the corners as Renck scored. In a sac bunt, freshman utility player Corwin Hemmingsen (Cave Creek, Ariz.) scored Walsh and helped cut the deficit as Pepperdine trailed by two, down 5-3 at the end of the fifth inning.
Â
Through the final four innings of the game, the Waves would only record three more hits with nobody finding their way around the bases.
Â
Portland added five more runs as Pepperdine lost 10-3, moving to seventh in the West Coast Conference standings.
