Waves Drop First Conference Series to Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team could not maintain the lead gained in the top of the third inning, falling 3-6 to Santa Clara.

Outhit 13 to four, the Waves' (12-23, 6-5) three run lead started slipping in the bottom of the third and a five-run bottom of the sixth would secure the win for the Broncos (17-15, 5-6).

BIG WAVES
Sophomore RHP Tommy Scavone (Pleasanton, Calif.) through 5.0 inning pitched recorded four strikeouts, allowing only one run.

Senior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y.) knocked in two of the Waves three runs of the day on a single to left center field.

Senior outfielder Connor Walsh (Niceville, Fla.) hit .500 on the afternoon, going 2-for-4.

RECAP
Through the first two innings, Scavone struck two out as it remained scoreless on both sides.

The Waves broke through in the top of the third, starting with a lead-off walk from senior infielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif.). Reaching on a defensive error, junior infielder Justin Rubin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) reached first and put Masino on second. Graduate infielder Brady Renck (Longmont, Colo.) was next up, dropping a ball in left field to load the bases. Bradshaw stepped up to the plate and got a ball through left center field, extending his hit streak to 14 games and driving in Masino and Rubin to put the Waves up 2-0. Junior Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) followed by laying a perfect bunt down, safely reaching first while scoring Renck and giving the Waves a 3-0 lead by the middle of the third inning.

The Broncos got one back in the bottom half of the third inning, scoring on two singles and cutting the deficit to two, trailing 3-1.

Santa Clara would not stop the offense in the third and after two more scoreless innings on both sides, broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth. Six singles, with the help of one sac fly, gave the Broncos the advantage, doubling the Waves score.

Pepperdine could not retaliate in the latter three innings, losing 6-3 in game two of the series,
