Offense Stalled in 9-1 Loss to Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team could not find an offense rhythm Friday night at Stephen Schott Stadium, losing the series opener to Santa Clara.

Despite eight hits, the Waves left 10 on base and could only find home plate once in the top of the sixth, dropping game one against the Broncos 1-9.

BIG WAVES
Junior infielder Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo.) went 2-for-3 and recorded one of the Waves two extra-base hits with a double.

Senior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y.) extended his hit streak to make it 13 games in a row, recording a single and going 2-for-5 on the night.

RECAP
The Waves (12-22, 6-4) could not convert hits to runs as base runners were stranded in the first seven innings. Contrastingly, the Broncos (16-15, 4-6) jumped out to an early lead and played ahead the entire game.

A double by junior infielder Justin Rubin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) gave Pepperdine a promising start in the first, but nothing would come of it as the score would remain unchanged going into the bottom half of the inning. Four hits, including a double down the right field line, gave Santa Clara an early 3-0 lead by the start of the second.

Six singles throughout the next four innings kept the Waves' offense alive with nothing to show for on the scoreboard.

Adding to their lead, the Broncos scored two more on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth, three singles would only result in one run as the Santa Clara lead extended to 6-0.

Avoiding a shutout, the Waves got one run back in the top of the sixth inning. Graduate outfielder Nick Upstill (Huntington Beach, Calif.) started the inning with a walk. Pemberton followed with a double out to left field, putting two runners in scoring position with one out. After another walk and loaded bases, Upstill would score on a wild pitch, making it 6-1 in favor of the Broncos.

Santa Clara added three more insurance runs through the next two innings with no response from Pepperdine.

With the 9-1 loss, the Waves are 6-4 in West Coast Conference play, sitting at fourth in the standings.

UP NEXT
Pepperdine will play game two of the three-game series against the Santa Clara Broncos at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Stephen Schott Stadium.
