Baseball Takes First Conference Series Against Pacific

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team shined offensively, leading to the first West Coast Conference series win at Eddy D. Field Stadium Sunday.

The Waves (7-17) hit multiple runs in the second consecutive game to open conference play with a series win over the Tigers (5-18). A six-run third inning would give Pepperdine the win with three insurance runs added in the eighth for a final score of 11-4.

BIG WAVES

Senior infielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif.) tallied his first home run of the season and tallied an RBI in his four plate appearances.

Senior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y.) hit .500 on the day including a home run and four RBIs.

Junior infielder Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) went 2-for-5 on the day with a double and two RBIs.

RECAP

Pepperdine would strike first after a quiet first inning to score two in the bottom of the second. A pair of singles came from graduate outfielder Nick Upstill (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and senior outfielder Connor Walsh (Niceville, Fla.) to put two on with nobody out. A bobbled ball would put graduate infielder Brady Renck (Longmont, Colo.) on first and score Upstill. Bradshaw sent a sacrificial fly to center field for the second run of the inning, ending the second with a 2-0 Waves lead.

The Tigers answered with two runs of their own in the top of the third inning. A pair of singles with two batters previously walked would give Pacific enough to tie the game by the middle of the inning.

Leading off the bottom half of the third inning, Masino aimed for the parking lot, homering to right field, giving the Waves a 3-2 lead. Two walks and a juggled ball at first base loaded the bases for junior catcher Andrew Savage (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) who sent a ball to right field deep enough to score junior infielder Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo.). With two on, Renck sent a ball to the warning track for a bases-clearing single, scoring two more. Next up was Bradshaw who became the sixth of the Waves to go yard this season, sending a two-run home run to the same spot Masino sent his homer. Pepperdine scored six runs on three hits, leading 8-2 by the end of the third inning.

Pacific would get one back on a left field double before both sides fell quiet for three innings. Starter graduate RHP Matthew Boyer (Edwardsville, Ill.) and sophomore RHP Dylan Stewart (Alameda, Calif.) put together three scoreless innings with only one hit allowed. The Waves would lead 8-3 by the end of the seventh inning.

Getting a homer of their own, Gabe Camacho tallied a solo home run for Pacific, bringing the Tigers one step closer trailing 8-4. Pepperdine responded with three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning off the bats of Bradshaw and Nunez. A single to center from Bradshaw would score Savage, who reached base on a ball down the left field line while Nunez' single would score both Bradshaw and Renck, who walked earlier in the inning.

Pepperdine would win the series 2-1, securing their second consecutive win 11-4.
