Waves Diminished by Roadrunners Late Rally

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a midweek game to California State University, Bakersfield in-between conference series'.

The Waves (7-18) led the majority of the game before a six-run sixth inning by the Roadrunners (5-19) would be enough to take the lead. Tallying on insurance runs in the eighth inning, CSUB would win with a final score of 10-5.

BIG WAVES

Freshman utility player Corwin Hemmingsen (Cave Creek, Ariz.) made his defensive debut at first base and batted 2-for-3 on the night including two RBIs.

Junior infielder Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) accounted for two of the Waves' five runs.

RECAP

The game began with four walks by the Roadrunner pitchers, giving the Waves an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, junior infielder Jacob Rebrook (The Woodlands, Texas) would send a sacrificial fly ball to right field, extending the Pepperdine lead to 2-0 by the middle of the inning.

CSUB would respond quickly, cutting the deficit to one on a defensive misjudgement, trailing 1-2 at the end of the first inning.

Graduate outfielder Nick Upstill (Huntington Beach, Calif) brought the Waves lead back to two on a single to the shortstop, which scored Nunez who initially reached first being hit by a pitch. The third inning would end with Pepperdine leading 3-1.

Despite five hits between the two teams, the following three innings would emerge scoreless. The seventh is where the narrative changed with multiple runs scored in both halves of the inning.

Nunez led off the seventh with a single to left field followed by a double threaded down the right field line by senior infielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif.) With his first double in his career, Hemmingsen sent a ball deep into right field, clearing the bases and extending the Waves lead to 5-1 to end the inning.
The Roadrunners would find their offensive groove in the bottom half of the inning. Leading off with a double, CSUB would go on to record a total of five hits to score six runs, giving the Roadrunners a 7-5 edge to end the seventh.

Pepperdine was unable to find a response in the top of the eighth. CSUB added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Without any baserunners in the top of the ninth, the Waves lose 10-5 and even out the series with the Roadrunners after a 10-inning win at Eddy D. Field Stadium earlier this year.
