Pepperdine Drops Road Match Against #17 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. — The Pepperdine men's tennis team took the doubles point, yet couldn't parlay that momentum into singles as the Waves fell 6-1 at #17 Stanford on Friday afternoon.

The Waves (1-3) won the doubles point for the second time all season as all three teams led late and two duos won break points down the stretch to put Pepperdine on the board. But the Cardinal (3-3) rebounded in singles, winning four of its six matches in straight sets.

Playing at the first position, Chris Papa and Maxi Homberg earned their first win of the season in a 6-4 victory. Moments later, Linus Carlsson Halldin and George Davis moved to 2-0 on the year after winning a key hold on deuce point to go up 5-3, then playing the match on serve to win 6-4. At the time Carlsson Halldin and Davis clinched, Edward Winter and Pietro Fellin broke Stanford's Nico Godsick and Filip Kolasinksi to take a 5-4 lead.

In singles, the Cardinal got on the board with straight-set wins on the fifth, sixth and second positions — the latter of which needed a tiebreak in the second set to decide the outcome. Stanford's Max Basing clinched for the Cardinal on the third position with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Carlsson Halldin.

The remaining singles matches were played out. On the first line, #28 Winter rallied with a 6-4, second-set win to force a third set against Nishesh Basavareddy, however, the Stanford sophomore won the first break point of the third game and never trailed in a 6-0, third-set win.

Fellin was the lone Wave to win the first set of his singles match, which he did by winning a pivotal tenth game en route to taking the first set 7-5. Yet Stanford freshman #92 Kyle Kang would go on to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-2.
