Malibu, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team opened the 2024 season 1-1 after splitting the day, defeating Utah in the afternoon after falling to California Baptist in the morning at Eddy D. Field Stadium Saturday.
The games were a tale of defense as game one went to extra innings tied at one, but CBU fired off three runs to close the game 4-1. Game two against Utah was scoreless until an error in the bottom of the seventh propelled the Waves to score the only run of the game, capping the day with a 1-0 victory.

GAME RECAP
The Waves were quick to score in the first inning of game one on a hit from Walsh. The defense was strong all game. highlighted by an outstretched tag at home plate by junior catcher Andrew Savage (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada).
After picking up a run in the bottom of the ninth, CBU was able to tack on an additional three runs, including a two-run double by Michael Carpentier. The Waves would end up falling to the Lancers 4-1.
Game two started defensively-minded from both teams, including with a runner at third in the top of the fifth when Rubin dove for a line drive headed for right center, keeping the Utes off the board.
The first and only run came in the seventh inning off the bat of Upstill. He laid down a bunt to the pitcher who threw to an unoccupied first base, resulting in the Waves' run.
The second game ended with a groundout to first, securing the Waves' first win of the season and closing out opening day with a 1-1 record.
