BERKELEY, Calif. — Capping off its Bay Area trip, the Pepperdine men's tennis team was swept by California 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.
In an attempt to rebound after losing the doubles point, three of the Waves' (1-4) singles matches reached the third set, yet the Golden Bears (3-3) won straight-set matches at the bottom of the lineup, then sealed the win with Alex Chang's three-set victory at the second position. When California clinched the match, Pepperdine was up on two courts and trailed by a game in the third set on court one.
In singles, Chris Papa, Linus Carlsson Halldin and Pietro Fellin won the first sets of their matches — the latter of whom got out to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreak en route to winning his first set 7-6 (4). But both Papa and Carlsson Halldin fell in the second set to force a third.
Meanwhile, #28 Edward Winter bounced back from losing the first set against Carl Emil In Winter's second set, the freshman broke Emil Overbeck on deuce point in the sixth game to go up a break, then Winter consolidated the break to take a 5-2 lead. The match was played on serve from that point forward, as Winter countered a 6-3, first-set loss with a 6-3 second-set win.
The Golden Bears got on the board first with straight-set wins on the sixth and fifth positions, which put Pepperdine in dire straits as the Waves were either tied or trailed in the remaining four singles matches. Alex Chang would clinch the match with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at the second position; as that happened, Winter's match was heading towards a close finish after the freshman broke Emil Overbeck to pull within one game, while Carlsson Halldin and Fellin led in their matches.
